Portrait Assignment

Working two jobs to pay her tuition, Jackie Schuler likes to walk the beaches of Door County to relax.

Bay Ridge Golf Course Assistant Manager Ben Ehlert enjoys the course in his down time.

  1. I think that the best part of your 2 photos is the way that you incorporated action into the pictures. It definitely adds interest to the pictures.

For the first photo, I really like that Jackie looks carefree (interpreted by the way she is running into the water). However, if this were my photo I might stand over to the side to get a different angle so that her face is included. I still really like this photo because even though you can't see the face, you can still get the personality. I also think that the composition with her in the middle of the frame, and pretty much taking up the entire picture is very cool.

As for your self-portrait, it looks good but I would have liked it more from different angle. It would be sweet to have a low angle shot with the camera looking up towards you swinging the golf club.

  2. Thanks for the feedback, Amy! I did get a few shots of her from different angles, but with the cloudless sky and no props, it got tricky to keep it from getting washed out.

Good point on the second shot...It would of worked out well if the ball was teed up. Thanks!

  3. The top photo has good qualities: sharp, good tone/contrast. It also has a high degree of interest. I don't like the tightness on the right side. Give a little space, especially when people are moving through a frame.

The bottom photo feels more like an action shot than a portrait. Photo could be cleaner by cropping out in bottom-right. How does this image feel like you rather than some other golf? It feels a bit generic because it is hard to see your face.
